Term 2 Update from Senior College

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Year 10 and 12 students attended the Illawarra Credit Union Careers Expo in Week 3 and discovered a world of post-school possibilities available to them. A large range of universities and other tertiary institutions were represented, along with the armed forces, apprenticeship opportunities and other exciting areas of employment.

Senior College Assemblies this Term are focusing on the work of Mark Davis, ’The Trouble With Paris' (as in, ‘How Paris Hilton helped my faith!’). The series examines how as Christians, we should respond to the pervasive influence of consumerism in our lives. The video clips are followed by lively discussions in Year groups about our own experiences of being a consumer. Many students report that the series has given them real food for thought.

Continuing on themes spiritual; we have been discussing the Fruit of the Spirit in the Year 12 Girls' Bible Class.  During an exercise, we undertook the task of comparing the Fruit evident in our own lives with criteria found in the Bible. Discussions were honest and lively.

Year 9 students were also invited along to a Cyber Bullying Workshop in Week 3. Senior Constable Kerryn Mura delivered some timely information about the ways that students can protect themselves and each other on the internet. With the growing influence of mobile communications, the opportunities for problems are so much greater.

Senior College has also continued to taste sporting success with the Girls' Soccer Team, coached by Peter Ramm, making it through the State Carnival. Undefeated in all their games, Mr Ramm said the girls played as a real team unit.

On the basketball court, two students from our College team have been selected onto the NSW Team. It was a fantastic effort and the girls who competed on the day represented their school with pride.

Congratulations also goes to all those students who, at Assembly, received their Bronze Certificates for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Mrs Hvalica has encouraged students to aim for the Silver Award over the next few Terms.
