Mrs Ruth Brown
Director of Primary
Get Ruth Brown talking about teaching and learning and pretty soon you realise the value she places on getting the fundamentals right for a great education.
‘The ability to read and write is the foundation of all learning. Education is about thinking and we think with language,’ she says.
‘I particularly enjoy the opportunity to contribute to the lives of children with a focus on reading and developing their literacy, numeracy and thinking skills.
‘It is exciting to witness the possibilities of a comprehensive education.’
Ruth is a life long learner. While she is currently completing a PhD that is focused on exploring different perceptions of student care, she is fond of saying that ‘learning is caring.’
She also has a strong belief that a Christian education is vital in shaping the values and direction of young people.
Ruth, who hails from Coffs Harbour, moved to Armidale where she studied at the University of New England where she gained her Diploma of Teaching, and a Bachelor and Masters of Education.
She taught for the 14 years in the Department of Education schools across Sydney and the New England area before being appointed at the Head of Junior School at PLC Armidale, a post she held for 15 years.
When she moved to the Illawarra, she held a number of posts in the Southern Highlands before moving to Cedars in 2011.
She appreciates the wide range and diversity of her previous schools.
‘It is wonderful to experience many different educational settings and be part of the learning and growth of so many students.’
But it’s not all work. Ruth says, ‘I spend my leisure time reading, attending musical performances, visiting art galleries and enjoying the company of family and friends.’
