On Friday 24 July Cedars’ Senior Girls Futsal Team fought hard to become the Runners Up for the NSW All School Futsal State Championships.
Tim Johnson, Cedars PDHPE Coordinator, who went along to cheer our girls on, was extremely proud of the team saying, “Our girls did an amazing job! Although they were one of the youngest teams in the competition with mostly year 10 and 11 students, and one year 12 student, they fought hard to overcome incredible odds.”
Mr Johnson went on to say, “We had the toughest pool group including sports school, Erindale College from Canberra, Illawarra Sports High, Bossley Park and Burwood, all with very strong futsal teams.”
Won 2-0 vs Bosley Park
Won 1-0 vs Burwood High
Won 1-0 vs Illawarra Sports High
Drew 1-1 Erindale College
Won 2-1 vs Endeavour Sports High
Won 1-0 vs St Marks College
Drew 1-1 vs International Football School – lost on Penalties 2-0
“We finished equal first in our pool and played defending champions, Endeavour Sports High in the Quarter Final. Our girls went out and dominated the game and won 2-1. We then played a strong St Marks side in the Semi and also won that game convincingly,” said Mr Johnson.
“In the Final Cedars played the International Football School. The girls were winning 1-0 and had a great chance to go up 2-0 but couldn’t quite scramble the ball across the line. They then scored just before Half Time. The game was very tight but no more goals were scored through normal or extra time although both teams created some good chances and Karlee Bexim pulled off a number of excellent saves.
The Final went into penalties and unfortunately these went against us this time, but our girls did an incredible job and it holds us in excellent shape for the next couple of years,” Mr Johnson continued proudly.
“The girls represented Cedars with pride and demonstrated Godly attitudes throughout the day. They would pray together before each match, and were very supportive and encouraging of each other.”
Mr Johnson finished by saying, “I was very proud to be a representative of the College and so impressed with each of our team members throughout the entire competition.”
