Community Award for Mr Gear at the Illawarra Prayer Breakfast

The Illawarra Prayer Breakfast is a significant event held each year in our region. A group of Cedars student leaders attend along with, pastors, bishops, mayors and business leaders. Those who gather together for this event spend time in corporate prayer for the Illawarra and a guest speaker delivers a message on the power or prayer.

Senator Eric Abetz was the invited speaker this year and he shared a message suggesting that prayer on its own is powerful but also requires action from us if we are to see significant results.

Mr Walton commented, “I was impressed and proud of our students who led worship on the day and prayed for the Illawarra.”

“I was especially grateful that I could be there to see Mr Andrew Gear receive an award for Excellence in Education for his work with students as a Mathematics Teacher and Careers Advisor. What made the day even more special is that Mr Gear’s wife Jenny also received an award for her work as a nurse in the Illawarra.”

College President Paul Bartlett commented about the award winners, “It was so special to see Mr and Mrs Gear receive their awards together. Both were so well deserved.”

Mr Walton added, “Mr Gear is a long term Mathematics Teacher and the Careers Advisor at Cedars Christian College. He does an exceptional job in both of those roles, predominantly due to his dedication to the students and his caring and thoughtful nature.

Whether Mr Gear is  in the classroom or helping students with careers or university applications he is passionate about helping them reach their potential and identify their God given gifts. He encourages his students and reinforces the fact that they are created in the image of God and have significance and purpose.

Mr Gear has developed a Careers Portal for the students to access at any time of the day or night and is available to counsel them through difficult decisions regarding their future. He also recently helped organise the Illawarra Careers Expo open to all schools from the region.

The individual careers interviews that Mr Gear holds for his students are well received and have become one of the strengths of our Senior College. Mr Gear is an excellent teacher of Mathematics, making complex formulae and tasks easily understandable for his students.

What makes Mr Gear a worthy recipient of this Education Award is that he places value on each individual student and goes above and beyond to help them achieve success whether in Maths, Careers,  or encouraging them in their Faith. He is not the kind of person that brags about his achievements or wants the spotlight so I think it is most appropriate that he is recognised for his contribution to education at Cedars and the wider Illawarra community.

Congratulations Mr Gear!”
