“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” – Dr Seuss
It’s time to say farewell to one of the friendliest Crossing Guard/Lollipop People you will ever meet. For 15 years Eric has smiled and waved at every car that has passed him by as he safely directs our students and their families across the road after school each day. Eric has now seen the Prep children he helped across the road 13 years ago, go onto graduate from Cedars. He has even been there as our graduates have returned as parents or even teachers.
Not a school day goes by where Eric doesn’t greet passers-by cheerfully and he makes sure everyone knows his motto: “Smile and the world smiles with you.”
Eric has always made the walk across his road fun for children, no they aren’t allowed to run, but they can pretend they’re statues or even on the odd occasion he’ll let an eager child skip across the road as he carefully watches them get to the other side safely.
“It costs nothing to make others happy” says Eric, “so keep a smile on your dial.’
Eric is leaving us to be a Crossing Guard closer to where his 95 year old mum lives – so he can be close by in case she needs him.
Eric, you will be missed greatly – but you have left each of us with the greatest gift – ‘a smile.’
