Hannah’s invaluable experience at Bell Shakespeare

“We know what we are not what we may be” – William Shakespeare

“From 5 to 9 of November I had the incredible opportunity of participating, as one of 12 students from around Australia, in the Bell Shakespeare Co. Work Experience Program, and am incredibly thankful to Bell Shakespeare for the invaluable experience.

Over the course of the week we engaged in all departments of the theatre company, including: Directing and Casting, Marketing, Production, Finance, Development and Education. Within each we would work directly with staff members, working through discussion on their distinct involvement in theatre and the company, their entrance in to the Arts and mentoring us through tasks we were to present to the company, other students, family and friends at the end of the week.

Amongst thorough learning and engagement with the functions of Bell Shakespeare, we were given the opportunity to access backstage tours of the Sydney Opera House and attend their touring production of “Julius Caesar” where we had the chance to interact personally with the cast and director, James Evans.

Above everything, the work experience was driven from knowledge that we, as young people, are the future of the Arts in Australia, whether we pursue creative passions as a career or as a pass-time, and an understanding of the incredible vast array of paths available in our rapidly diversifying society.

This experience instilled in me an understanding of the value of creativity and self-expression which will help direct the paths of my future.

I cannot truly express how profound, insightful and inspiring this experience has been to me as the Bell Shakespeare Co. staff welcomed me and the fellow 12 students with enthusiastically open arms.” – Hannah Cook, Year 11
