40 Years of Cedars

Happy Birthday to Us!

Wow, it’s 40 years since Cedars Christian College (Wollongong Christian Community School back in 1981) started with about eight  students in the auditorium of Lighthouse Church.

Lighthouse birthed this school because Bill and Joan Beard had a vision to see Christian values and the Gospel instilled into the lives of a new generation.

I was there! Yep, I was 13 years old and already at Lighthouse Church. Just a few years on and I remember helping the many volunteers build the first classroom on the new and exciting Waples Rd site.

Those first 20 years were a struggle.  Staffing challenges, site challenges and particularly financial challenges. I remember Lighthouse Church financially rescuing the school on several occasions.

Cedars has become a strong and influential school over the 40 years, in fact ‘Cedars’ is a great image of the way God builds successful things. Success never comes through short term commitment. Just like the early growth of a Cedar tree is threatened with the many things ready to take it out, Cedars too faced life-threatening events. However, it was God’s plan to partner a Christian school not just with Lighthouse, but the 39 other churches who have stood alongside us with dedication and support.

God promises that with every vision He gives us that He will supply the people needed to achieve that vision. To the many principals, teachers, staff, board members, parents and of course our students past and present, thank you and Happy Birthday!

Cedars Christian College, like its namesake will continue to grow stronger and provide community reach for many, many years to come!
