It felt like just yesterday we were welcoming everyone back to school and here we are at the end of Term 2! Although restrictions have been easing, things are not quite back to normal and I wanted to mention a couple of things in more detail as we finish Semester 1 and plan for the future.
Our Semester 1 reports for 2020 look a bit different this year as they reflect the recent period of remote learning caused by COVID-19 restrictions.
Although outcomes were assessed in each Key Learning Area, teacher comments in K-6 are primarily focused on Literacy and Numeracy this Semester. In 7-12, reports will emphasise the content and learning experiences that students participated in and include a Pastoral Care comment.
Our school reports usually give you some insight into how your child has been working in class and the approach they have taken towards their learning. However, this Semester parents gained firsthand knowledge of this as homes became classrooms and parents played an even more direct role in encouraging and supporting their child’s learning.
The social skills that were built through enduring challenging times together, and the resilience developed as we adjusted and flexed through remote learning and social isolation were significant. Students figured out ways to be innovative, collaborative and flexible in an environment that demanded clear and constant communication.
The hidden curriculum of a school are the skills and character we teach in between the content, as with those traits mentioned above. I am thrilled with how well our students, families and staff navigated their way through the COVID-19 period of isolation. So as you read through your child’s report and review what they have learned, remember the many gains made in those difficult to measure character traits and the diverse and rich skills they developed in response to a worldwide crisis.
Early next term students who are currently in Year 8 and 10 will start an online subject selection process for 2021. Teachers have been busy filming introductory videos of their subjects, and students and parents will have access to these online during the holidays. More information will be available shortly.
This is a great example of how we can do things differently in the future. As a team at Cedars we are constantly forward thinking and I am excited that this new process will be one that benefits our students and families.
Planning for Future Events
Although restrictions are easing there may still be events in the life of our school that will need to be adjusted. Planning is underway for our Year 12 Graduation and Formal as well as our end of year Celebration. We will keep you posted along the way and encourage you to continue to interact with C-Hub for important announcements and updates.
Speaking of the future, I have been conducting enrolment interviews for 2021. Many of these have been online interviews. It has been a lot of fun meeting 2 year olds via video conferencing and I am pleased to let you know that our Prep program for 2021 is full with new applications being placed on waiting list.
If you are like me, there have been plenty of new things to do and learn this term. I hope that over the break you have the opportunity to stop, relax and reflect.
Looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
